Steamboat Materials Recovery Facility (MRF)
The Steamboat Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) is a key part of our community’s sustainability efforts, making it easier than ever to recycle and keep valuable materials out of the landfill. Using a single-stream recycling system, the MRF allows residents and businesses to place a wide variety of recyclables into a single bin for sorting and processing. This approach increases convenience, encourages participation, and helps boost local recycling diversion rates.
Single-Stream Recycling
Our MRF accepts a broad range of materials in one bin, including:
- Plastics #1–#7
- Mixed paper, newspapers, and junk mail
- Flattened cardboard boxes
- Aluminum and steel cans
- Glass bottles and jars
Expanded Plastic Acceptance
As of June 1, 2025, the Steamboat MRF began accepting all plastic containers labeled #1–#7. This expansion includes items such as yogurt cups, butter tubs, and produce clamshells. By broadening the range of plastics we can process, we are helping reduce landfill waste and create more opportunities for these materials to be repurposed.
Materials Not Accepted
To protect our sorting equipment and maintain safety, the following materials are not accepted at the MRF:
- Plastic bags
- Styrofoam
- Electronic waste
- Fluorescent light bulbs or tubes
- Hazardous waste such as paint, chemicals, and batteries
How to Recycle at the MRF
Recyclables must be placed in the designated dumpster units located at the landfill. There is no public access inside the MRF itself, so all recycling is done through these bins. Please make sure all items are clean and dry before placing them in the containers to prevent contamination.
Hours of Operation
Recyclables can only be dropped off during operating hours, from 8 AM to 3 PM. We encourage residents and businesses to plan their drop-offs within this window to ensure proper handling of materials.
Fees
There is no charge for Apex Waste Solutions consumers using the Milner location to drop off recyclables at the MRF.
Supporting Local Sustainability
The MRF is more than a recycling facility—it is a community resource. We actively work to increase recycling rates, reduce landfill use, and engage with local residents to make sustainable living more accessible. Every item recycled here helps move our community toward a cleaner, greener future.
